Limitations

We had encountered a lot of problems and experienced a lot of hardship throughout the filming process.

1) Scouting of Talents

Here we would like to present a story with a dramatic plot twist to you. Originally, none of us will be acting for this trailer. Angel asked 2 of her secondary schoolmates to act for us and they had agreed. We decided to film during exploration week. However, when we announced the filming date, they rejected our request due to busy schedule. So, we had to change our plan to Plan B. Jia Ern volunteered to sacrifice for our group to act as the male lead and we just needed to find another girl to act for us. We had learnt a lesson from last time, and we decided to find a student from the same college. We thought that by finding a friend of us it will be more convenient for filming and everything will be alright. Like what we had imagined, everything went smooth and fine. However, 2 days before our shooting day, our female lead got ill and she couldn't make it for us. This sudden news stroke us like a lightning and all our preparations became useless again. In a nutshell, Angel had to be a  substitute for her after a voting among our group was conducted. However, this incident had enhanced our friendship bonds and we think that it is worthy! :)

2) Budgets and Financial Problems

While we were filming at Kuala Lumpur, Pei Lin parked her car in the parking area near China Town.  After we ended our shooting in that area, we needed to move on to Pavilion. Here comes the painful part of the story. When we entered the parking area, there's a signboard near the entrance writing something like you need to pay RM8 for first hour and RM5 for every subsequent hour. And it was written there the price you need to pay for the maximum hour would be RM26.50. After filming, sweaty and tired, we paid RM26.50 for the parking. This wasn't the end of our story. Neglecting this lesson, we parked in the parking lots provided by Pavilion. Same thing, it was written there you will need to pay RM30 if you reached the maximum hour parking your vehicle there. We arrived Pavilion at about 12pm, and we left there at 10pm because we needed to film the night view of the city. Yeah, we paid RM30. Second time of the day and we paid a total amount of RM56.50 in a day. Very painful. Also, we decided to film a mirror scribbling scene which symbolised the hatred of the protagonist towards herself. For better visual impacts, we bought a RM15.40 lipstick for that and finished it within a 5 minutes scene. While filming in FRIM, we was asked to pay RM5 per person as the admission fees and RM5 for each camera we used. We bear the weight together and had divided the fees among ourselves.

we were also required to write a letter to the authorities of FRIM in order to get permission for shooting

3) Time Management

Amidst of our assignments, we need to find time and go for a small trip to film our trailer. After that, we need to edit the trailer and it really took us a lot of time because we kept on making adjustments wishing to present and hand in the best version.

Even though we had encountered a lot of hardships throughout the whole process of this assignments but we managed to overcome it and transformed them into precious memories and experiences.  All of us had tried our best and we had no regrets! :D

Post-production

Angel and Pei Lin did a rough cut respectively, but we found that the two versions has their own footage arrangement, and both possessed different qualities, therefore we decided to combine the virtues of both rough cuts.

We created a YouTube playlist to collect suitable background music, finally we selected four tracks for the movie trailer:

1. Toshio Masuda - Shinen
2. Toshio Masuda - Mushi
3. Sigur Ros - Olsen Olsen
4. James Newton Howard - Fairy Dance

There are other songs suggested by our group members, but not listed in the YouTube playlist. We spent a lot of time to explore the most suitable music to fit in, but it ended up in a mess because the genre of the suggestions were too different. Therefore, Jia Ern, who was in charged of music editing just follow her sense to insert background music, without being limited by the suggestions.

Experiments

Before we started our shooting, we did some experiments on video shooting. Here are some of the examples of our experimentation. Not all video can be uploaded due to the limitation of file size in Blogger.

We also experimented on photography shooting as well. We used different kind of filters and different  ISO to take the photos.

Pei Lin's fish tank is enormous.

Behind The Scenes

Angel and Jia Ern went to Pei Lin's house together on Friday. They slept over at her house for 2 nights because it was more convenient for discussion. Pei Lin has a dog named Momo and 2 big aquariums. We had fun playing with the animals and talked nonsense together.

Momo the dog
Momo is wearing diapers because it doesn't know how to go to toilet.

We filmed one of the scene in front of Pei Lin's aquarium. We found the fish very annoying. It kept on photo-booming and we had to wait for it to swim away. We had a really hard time filming this scene.

Jia Ern is filming the fish

We rehearsed the scenes together as a preparation for the next day.

However, we kept on having NGs and couldn't done it properly. At this moment of time, Pei Lin served us coconut juice and we managed to finish it right after we drank it. Pei Lin's coconut juice was miraculous.

Pei Lin fetched us to KL the next day while Jolin went there by herself.

This video below is supposed to be one of our scene in the trailer. But we didn't use it.

'Bomoh' of the year.

Jolin went back home while Angel, Pei Lin and Jia Ern stayed for the night scenes. 3 of them went back home at around 10pm and arrived home at 11pm because they took the wrong route and was lost in the midst of the dark city. A little interlude before moving on to the next paragraph: we met Mr Marius, one of our lecturer from The One Academy, shopping in Pavilion.

The next day, 4 of us went to FRIM together. We had Roti Canai as breakfast because we were told that there's only grass in FRIM.

Jia Ern is dead. Don't die Jia Ern!

While filming in The One Academy, we encountered problems finding blood for suicide. So we used watercolour instead.

trying out

For the mirror scene, we spent RM15.40 for one lipstick.

RM15.40 gone. T^T

Cheap quality. D:

Also, we decided to put in scenes of people smiling in our trailer to symbolise love but we didn't get to use them at last. Here are some of the videos of the smiling people.

We had so much fun doing this assignment!

Shooting Progress: 3

Date: 16/3/16
Venue: Block J/Block M, The One Academy/ Ming Tien Restaurant, Subang

These were the last scenes of our movie trailer. We haven't filmed the suicide scenes, which is the highlight of our trailer. According to the scripts, we also need to film a bully scene in order to complete everything. We had been keeping that in mind that we haven't film the suicide scenes but we couldn't find any places suitable for jumping during our shooting progresses. Due to this problem, we changed the plot and made the protagonist do something else instead of suiciding. We thought that actually we don't have to film a suicide scene, we just need to portrayed the meaning to the audiences that the girl have been hating herself all this time. So, we made her cut her wrist instead. After having a discussion, all of us came to an agreement that Block M and Block J of our college, The One Academy will be the best venue for all of these scenes.

We went to Ming Tien Restaurant after class for lunch and scenes shooting.

Candid!

We went to Block M after that because another group was using Block J.

Jolin played the role of the bully because we were running out of actor. ( our group only has 4 members!)

We add in a scene spontaneously near the lift in Block M.

We went to Block J after this.

Here is where we will film our wrist cutting scenes

Originally, we decided to film near the lockers but we can't find a suitable angle to film that. No choice, we have to film in another place.

We used the little room instead.

We had completed our shooting progress. We only left the editing part and we will finish our movie trailer!

Shooting Progress: 2

Date: 13/3/16
Venue: Pei Lin's House/ FRIM, Kepong

Second day of our shooting. Angel, Pei Lin & Jia Ern had filmed a scene at Pei Lin's house before they took off to FRIM. We were supposed to film this scene in the Aquaria, KLCC but the tickets fees had exceed our budgets. Due to financial problems, we moved on to Plan B, and shoot the scene at Pei Lin's house. She owns a big aquarium as well!

A screenshot from the trailer

After filming the aquarium scene, four of us gathered and went to FRIM, the place where Jia Ern and Pei Lin had went before hand. We went to the jungle as planned for the first scene. As expected, the sunlight was warm and transparent, and it was really suitable for our shooting.

Pei Lin found a big leaf, and she was happy with it

The shooting progress went on smoothly. We walked to the waterfall after this.

The directors were examining the footages

We finished most of our scenes in 2 days time. We were glad to see that everything went perfectly and beautifully according to our plans.

Shooting Progress: 1

Date: 12/3/16
Venue: Train Station/Petaling Street/Temple/ Pavilion/ KLCC, KL

This is the first day of our shooting. Four of us had planned a trip to Kuala Lumpur before hand for our shooting. Originally, we picked Petaling Street as our first destination. However, out of our expectation, we arrived there too early (we arrived there at about 8am) and the shops were still closed. So, we moved onto the train station, which is the nearest spot from Petaling Street.

Angel, Pei Lin & Jia Ern was experimenting the camera.

We have a scene on the staircase
We wanted a scene of the train but it doesn't turn out very well.

We took almost an hour for the scenes here. Since this was our first time shooting a actual video. We couldn't get the right angle and keep on retaking the videos. After that, we went back to Petaling Street. We had a scene of eating and all of us agreed that Petaling Street was the best spot.

This is the spot where we film our trailer
Jolin & Pei Lin were trying their best to film perfectly

Happy kids were happy!

very hungry

Spotted something?
Next, we walked around the streets to see if we can film anything there. We found one spot near Petaling Street and we added in a scene on the spot without referring to the script.

The view of this street is quite nice
it has vintage ambient
A screenshot of our trailer

After filming all of the scenes above, we still had a lot of time left because we need to wait until the sun set for the night view. We continue strolling around and we found a oriented Chinese temple.

We also made the temple as one of our shooting venue. It took us a whole afternoon shooting the scenes. It was tiring but fun. We continue our journey and went to Pavilion.

the outside view of Pavilion

Pavilion is having an exhibition during this time
However, tripods weren't allow in Pavilion, so we had quite a hard time filming some scenes because our hands keep shaking. But luckily we still managed to overcome it by helping each other. (teamwork!)

moving into Pavilion!

In Pavilion, we met a lot of nice people who were willing to lend us a hand for our shooting.

These people are willing to help us

While waiting for the time to pass, we had dessert together in the Nana's Green Tea.

Jia Ern was doing the "Bomoh" thing

it's tiring but fun!

We even got a chance to shop in S.P.A.U while waiting.

And it was finally night

A dark alley near Pavilion
We walked to KLCC through the canopy walk from Pavilion

We went home after finish filming. Our shooting day was pretty successful.
